It provides the staples that you would expect in a convenience store, including fresh fruit and veg, magazines and newspapers, beer, wine and spirits, frozen food, cigarattes and food essentials. It has long opening hours, and is open throughout the year. Parking is available directly outside. Please check opening hours. See the right-hand links for main website, including location and opening hours.

The Astolat

UPDATE: 30th September: The Astolat is currently closed until further notice. I understand, from the staff at the One Stop, who been informed by the police, that the Landlord - Richard - has died. I saw him on Saturday the 27th of September, and on Tuesday the 30th it was closed. I have no further details on this, though there is a mobile phone number for Andy, the barman. He was a lovely man, and his death is a very sad event.

The Astolat public house, or pub, is located at the junction of Old Palace Road and Madrid Road, next to the One Stop shop. The Astolat provides the usual range of wines, beers, lagers, alco-pops and soft drinks that you would expect to find in most pubs. It is not a real ale pub, and the emphasis is more towards lager than beer/ bitter. Food is served at lunchtimes, and you will need to check about evening food, as this changed when the Astolat changed hands earlier in the year, the previous owner having been Richard Spall, brother of the actor Timothy Spall.

There is a pool table, dart board, fruit machines, quiz machine, MP3 juke box, 2 large screens showing major sporting events (please check) and a selection of board games.

There is a functional patio area, smoking shelter and car park. Tel: 01483 455560.

Post Office

Onslow Village no longer has its own Post Office, this having closed in 2001. The nearest are Park Barn, University Stag Hill, Woodbridge Road and Guildford Town centre. There is a Post Office finder in the links section on the right.

Off Licence

Onslow Village has no off licence, and the most local one, Unwins, closed in 2006. The One Stop shop is the most local source of alcohol. If this is shut, there is the Co-Op about 400 yards down Madrid Road, towards the station and town centre, and then there is also Tesco.

The two most local chemists are at Tesco at Ashenden and Direct Pharmacy on Madrid Road. The local papers carry details of the rota. See the right-hand links for the main websites including opening hours.

Launderettes are very few and far between these days. There is a launderette on Madrid Road at the junction with Agraria Road.

Further afield

Beyond the shops already listed, there is a mixed set of shops on Madrid Road, running in towards town, including a launderette, funeral directors, wood floor and tile shop, Chinese takeaway, shoe shop, chemist, Co-Op ( See the right-hand links for main website including opening hours) , photo-copy repair shop, hairdresser and Asian mini-supermarket.

Tesco is about a 20-30 minute walk, depending on whereabouts in the village you are, or about 3-4 minutes by car. There is then the whole range of shops in Guildford itself, which has a very substantial shopping centre.

If you are the owner or manager of one of the establishments listed above, and wish to comment, please do so via the Contact Us page. I would be delighted to add more details including phone numbers, opening hours and more details of products and services. I didn't wish to presume to post this type of information without consent.
